HHS OIG has been reviewing hospital wage data and, not surprisingly, found that hospitals are grossly overstating their wage data.
On April 20, 2006, the OIG released an audit of Citrus Memorial Hospital for October 2002 through September 2003. The OIG found that the hospital overstated its wage data by nearly $2.4 million. A few weeks earlier, the OIG released an audit of Hackettstown Regional Medical Center, which found that the center overstated its wage data by $311,908 in fiscal year 2003.
The impetus for the great Columbia HCA whistleblower cases was a cost accounting issue. Perhaps we are seeing a new trend of cost accounting analysis that will bring qui tam whistleblower lawsuits from across the country.
