According to the Northwest Indiana Times, the United States government has filed a lawsuit against Methodist Hospitals, accusing the hospital chain of defrauding the U.S. of over 51 million dollars by over-billing Medicare.
The government claims that over a 10 year period, from 1995 to 2004, the Hospitals' former president, John Bethjemann, its Corporate Compliance Manager, Tom Diehl, and 12 others generated false claims for medical services which were ultimately submitted to Medicare. In addition to the over-billing fraud, the suit also alleges the Hospitals improperly demanded kickbacks. Physicians who had exclusive hospital contracts were allegedly required to pay kickbacks in order to continue to receive patient referrals. Bethjemann and Diehl are named in kickback scheme, in addition to Broadway Radiology Services, Northwest Indiana Radiology, and Advanced Imaging Center.
