Marion County Medical Center has agreed to pay the United States $3,750,000 to settle allegations that it submitted false claims to Medicare, Medicaid and Tricare.
A former employee of the medical center, Dr. Kenneth Orbeck, brought a whistle blower law suit under the False Claims Act, alleging that the center paid high salaries to two doctors to refer, order or arrange for the center to provide certain hospital services. He also accused the center of submitted claims for services unsubstantiated by the supporting documentation. As a result of Dr. Orbeck's efforts, he is set to receive $610,083 for his whistle blower share. Pursuant to the terms of the settlement agreement, the United States will require Marion county Medical Center to monitor its future activities to ensure compliance with Federal Regulations.
